Herman Mudgett, also known as H. H. Holmes, doctor and serial killer, built a murder castle in Chicago, wherein he killed anywhere from 25 to 60 people between 1889 and 1892. In 1893, he began construction on a similar building on "inherited" land in downtown Fort Worth. Already pursued by law enforcement, he fled the city even before his new building was completed.
